King’s speech advances UK digital ID despite warnings
In the 13 May 2026 King’s Speech, Keir Starmer’s government confirmed plans to introduce “voluntary” digital IDs under the Digital Access to Services Bill. The exact wording from the speech: “My ministers will also proceed with the introduction of Digital ID that will modernise how citizens interact with public services.” Note the term “citizens” for his subjects.
Marketed as a convenient way to access services, the system builds on the government’s One Login. This push comes despite nearly three million people signing a petition against digital ID, one of the largest in parliamentary history.
